Allan Vernon was born
in Mandeville, Jamaica on December 12, 1942. He grew up in Kingston, Jamaica,
where he attended North St. Adventist School and Kingston Tech. In 1961
he migrated to England and worked as a telephone technician. In 1972 he
moved to the United States where he worked in construction because of
his love for carpentry.
In 1981 he pursued his favorite hobby - cooking,
and one year later opened the first Jerk-style restaurant with authentic
Jamaican cuisine in the United States. According to Vernon: "It has
been a dream come true to watch the flavor of Jerk spread throughout the
United States.
" In 1990, He opened Vernon's Jerk Paradise
II restaurant at 254 West 29th Street in New York City. Allan Vernon has
been known as The King of Jerk ever since.
The name Allan Vernon is synonymous in New York
City with Jamaican jerk delights. Vernon, who originates from Mandeville,
credits his mother for his affinity with the kitchen. In fact, he dedicates
his book to her and suggests that her insistence on enhancing his culinary
endeavors"by being hard on me to stay in the kitchen, even against
my will," paid off. |
